4 Head of the Party Description Presidents are the de facto leaders of their political party (Republican and Democrat) Presidents work to get people of their own party elected or appointed to office through campaigning and political influence.

5 Head of the Party President Obama hired all new cabinet members and other high executives from his own party when he came to office in 2008. President Bush campaigned for and raised money at a rally for a party nominee to the U.S. Senate. EXAMPLES:

6 Head of State Description President represents the nation and performs ceremonial duties. President is a living symbol of the nation.

7 Head of State Host foreign leaders Represent the U.S. at world events. Host State Dinners Examples (President Obama greets Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip at the White House, May 2011

8 Head of State Give out awards or medals Throwing the starting pitch for the World Series Examples

9 Chief Diplomat Description President is responsible for U.S. Foreign policy. The President (with the help from his advisors) makes key decisions about how the U.S. should interact with other countries

10 Chief Diplomat The President sending a message to North Korea. Traveling to China to negotiate a treaty or trade agreement. Examples President Clinton signs a bill extending permanent, normal trade status to China.

11 Chief Law and Budget Planner Description Only Congress has the power to make laws and pass the budget, but the President drafts a legislative program and budget and presents these to the law makers.

17 Commander-in-Chief Description The President is head of U.S. armed forces. President will advise with Joint Chiefs of Staff and decide where troops will be stationed, ships sent and how weapons will be used.

18 Commander-in-Chief Deciding whether or not to use military force against another country Examples: After 9/11, President Bush is the one who decided to send troops into Afghanistan and then Iraq
