SPORTSMANSHIP – CONFORMING TO THE WRITTEN AND UNWRITTEN RULES OF SPORT. CHEATING – BREAKING THE RULES OF SPORT. UNWRITTEN RULES – SOMETIMES REFERRED TO AS ‘THE SPIRIT OF THE GAME’, UNWRITTEN RULES ARE VALUES AND ETHICS WHICH WE EXPECT ALL SPORTSMEN AND WOMEN TO FOLLOW. SPORTSMANSHIP – CONFORMING TO THE WRITTEN AND UNWRITTEN RULES OF SPORT. FAIR PLAY – TREATING YOUR OPPONENT AS AN EQUAL AND ABIDING BY THE RULES OF YOUR SPORT. GAMESMANSHIP – WHERE YOU USE WHATEVER MEANS YOU CAN TO OVERCOME YOUR OPPONENT. THE ONLY AIM HERE IS THE WIN, AND FOR MOST PEOPLE IT IS NOT A QUESTION OF BREAKING THE RULES – MORE BENDING THEM TO YOUR ADVANTAGE. DEVIANCE – IN SOCIETY IS WHERE AN INDIVIDUAL OR GROUP BREAKS AWAY FROM THE EXPECTED NORMS OF THE SOCIETY, DRIFTS AWAY FROM THE STRUCTURAL AND FUNCTIONAL RULES. ETIQUETTE – CONVENTIONAL RULES OF PERSONAL BEHAVIOUR IN POLITE SOCIETY; CEREMONIAL OF COURT – UNWRITTEN CODE.

Possible causes of violence by players include: Importance of result Nature of the game Provocation or ‘sledging’ e.g. wicketkeepers Disappointment and frustration De-humanised view of the opposition – helmets and padding of the opposition is something to hit rather than to respect them as humans. Weapons in the form of sticks, bats, clubs Crowd behaviour Emotional intensity – psyching up

POSSIBLE CAUSES OF CROWD VIOLENCE: CONTROVERSIAL DECISIONS PRE-MATCH HYPE ALCOHOL/DRUGS RACISM AND RELIGION POOR PROVISION FOR SPECTATORS THE SCORE OR RESULT GANGS OTHERS??????????????
10
POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS: ALL SEATS CCTV CONTROL OF ALCOHOL BANS FOR MISCONDUCT FAMILY ENCLOSURES ALL TICKET MATCHES MEMBERSHIP SCHEMES Which sports do you think would be most likely to lead to aggression in sport?
11
Controlled aggression is now an accepted part of many sports. We would still frown on an uncontrolled situation where fists fly and injury is caused. If it happened on the streets it would be a crime. Not knew – seen video of mob football and in pre-Industrial England which was violent and brutal. However, over the years we became a country known for gentlemanly behaviour, respect of the opposition – play to the spirit of the game. But as we have said, now that the stakes are so high, gamesmanship is common place.
