Can stand alone as a sentence.

3. Then what's a dependent clause?
A group of words that contains a subject and a verb but does NOT express a complete thought.
Cannot stand alone as a sentence - must be linked with an independent clause.
Begins with a subordinating conjunction.

4. Sure. When I get to school in the morning, I am ready to learn.
Although I am surrounded by my peers, I stay focused all day.
After school is over, I hurry home to do my homework and study.
The clauses in yellow are dependent clauses. They have a noun and a verb, but don't express a complete thought.

5. Subordinating conjunctions in dependent clauses
Dependent clauses often start with a subordinating conjunction.
Before I can allow you to leave, I must get my paper back.
Until I get my paper back, you can't leave the room.
Before and until are subordinating conjunctions. There are lots of subordinating conjunctions, but we're going to look at 10...

8. So how do I use subordinating conjunctions and dependent clauses?
(Subordinating conjunction + noun + predicate) + comma + independent clause = complex sentence
While most people like pepperoni on their pizza, I prefer spinach and onion.

9. Let's practice!
Write a concise paragraph (approximately 150 words) about your morning routine. Include at least four complex sentences using four DIFFERENT subordinating conjunctions and at least one compound sentence using a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS). Underline your conjunctions!
