FP7 /4 EUROPEAN COMMISSION - Research DG – September 2006 More on Regions Regions of Knowledge Through the development of regional ‘research-driven clusters’ Two objectives for all European regions : Strengthen their capacity for investing in RTD and carrying out research activities Produce research strategies that contribute to regional economic development
5
FP7 /5 EUROPEAN COMMISSION - Research DG – September 2006 Regions of Knowledge: What is a cluster? Research Entity Local Enterprise (e.g. SME) Regional Research– Driven Cluster Regional Authority Other Actors (e.g. Banks)
6
FP7 /6 EUROPEAN COMMISSION - Research DG – September 2006 Regions of Knowledge Activities: Analysis: studies and forward-looking exercises (foresight, benchmarking, etc) to identify roadmaps for cluster development Mentoring: partnerships between technologically advanced and less- advanced regions, identifying best practice for cluster development Integration: trans-regional partnerships of public and private research centres to develop strategies to maximise RTDI investment at regional level Expected outcome: Improve links between stakeholders and local business community Foster trans-national / cross-border cooperation Improve research networking and enhance mutual learning of regional actors
