Context The number of devices connected to the Internet exceeded that of people in 2008 and Expected to reach 50 billion in 2020 (Swan, 2012) Many of those are sensors which may be organized into sensing networks Environmental wireless sensor networks in the IoT have a new kind of scope which can be applied to a wide range of uses (Martinez, 2004) This is creating a revolution in all environmental sciences similar to the one generated by the use of satellite remote sensing in the 1970s (Hart et. al. 2006).

INSPIRE and observation data from sensors INSPIRE as Framework Directive is focused on the ’spatial’ However Guidelines for the use of Observations & Measurements and Sensor Web Enablement-related standards in INSPIRE Annex II and III data specification development Created in response to the necessity to provide observation data in Annex II and Annex III http://inspire.ec.europa.eu/documents/Data_Specificatio ns/D2.9_O&M_Guidelines_v2.0rc3.pdf http://inspire.ec.europa.eu/documents/Data_Specificatio ns/D2.9_O&M_Guidelines_v2.0rc3.pdf SOS is seen as one of the possible candidates for the extension of TG for INSPIRE Download services (v. 3.0)

Study on SOS in the context of INSPIRE Comparison with other solutions Mapping between INSPIRE NS regulation and SOS specifications (Bröring et. al. 2012) Availability of client/server solutions

Why not Atom and WFS? Data view Geospatial versus Observation centric perspective on data Atom – not suited for the purpose of direct access WFS is flexible enough to accommodate observation data –However: –WFS focus is on features –Flexibility may lead to very different implementations –SOS focuses on observations (e.g. 1 TB of data for one feature) Service implementation Predefined dataset download service Direct access download service WFSХХ AtomХ
