2
CULTIVATION The process of growing plants on arable land Approximately 13% of the Earth’s land is arable Cultivation requires three components: –Fertile soil (nutrients and minerals) –Water –Seeds
3
Standard Agriculture The typical season involves four phases: –Till the soil –Plant seeds –Weed control –Harvest The length of the growing season is dependent upon the crop being grown (usually between 3 – 5 months).
4
SUBSISTENCE FARMING Farming in which farmers grow only enough to support their family or small community. Found largely in Africa, Asia, and South America.
5
INTENSIVE FARMING Industrial/Commercial Agriculture Requires large fields/herds High amount of chemical fertilizers and pesticides Large amount of machinery used in each process of cultivation Gene manipulation Hormone manipulation
6
LAND MANIPULATION Terracing Irrigation Trying to get as much arable land as possible
7
INDUSTRIAL HERDING Large scale ranches Chicken farms Pig farms
8
ORGANIC FARMING Smaller scale Utilize crop rotation Use natural fertilizers (compost, manure) Biological pest control (natural predators, etc.)
