1 AGRICULTURE The growing of plants and raising of domesticated animals.

2 CULTIVATION The process of growing plants on arable land Approximately 13% of the Earth’s land is arable Cultivation requires three components: –Fertile soil (nutrients and minerals) –Water –Seeds

3 Standard Agriculture The typical season involves four phases: –Till the soil –Plant seeds –Weed control –Harvest The length of the growing season is dependent upon the crop being grown (usually between 3 – 5 months).

4 SUBSISTENCE FARMING Farming in which farmers grow only enough to support their family or small community. Found largely in Africa, Asia, and South America.

5 INTENSIVE FARMING Industrial/Commercial Agriculture Requires large fields/herds High amount of chemical fertilizers and pesticides Large amount of machinery used in each process of cultivation Gene manipulation Hormone manipulation

6 LAND MANIPULATION Terracing Irrigation Trying to get as much arable land as possible

7 INDUSTRIAL HERDING Large scale ranches Chicken farms Pig farms

8 ORGANIC FARMING Smaller scale Utilize crop rotation Use natural fertilizers (compost, manure) Biological pest control (natural predators, etc.)
