HISTORY AND POLITICS OF EUROPEAN INTEGRATION: BOOK EXAMS 1 General information on book exams POLH1019 POLH1024 POLH1038 POLH1035 POLH1036

A number of books to read on you own – questions to answer during a collective exam session. Example: POLH1035: Economic History of European Integration Two books in total: 1. Eichengreen, Barry: The European Economy since 1945: Co- ordinated Capitalism and Beyond (Princeton University Press, 2006/2008) 2. Milward, Alan: The European Rescue of the Nation-state (Routledge, London, revised edition 2000) 3. Kiran Klaus Patel (ed.), Fertile Ground for Europe? The History of European Integration and the Common Agricultural Policy since 1945 (Nomos, 2009) 4. Emmanuel Mourlon-Druol, A Europe Made of Money. The Emergence of the European Monetary System (Cornell Uni Press, 2012)

Book-exam and self-study: A book-exam is a self-study exam which serves an auxiliary role, helping students to deepen their knowledge in a particular field or issue. You will have to read the equivalent of two books per exam and answer two questions with short essays Book exams are taken once a month on the regular exam day of the Faculty of Social Sciences, normally on Friday, 12.00-16.00. Registration: Online: Registration for the book exams takes place through NettiOpsu (https://ssl.utu.fi/nettiopsu)https://ssl.utu.fi/nettiopsu Indicate which books you choose for the exam! Physical registration through the brown envelopes of the Department of Contemporary History At least one week before the exam More on registration: http://www.utu.fi/en/units/soc/units/conthist/unit/hpei/registrati on/Pages/home.aspx http://www.utu.fi/en/units/soc/units/conthist/unit/hpei/registrati on/Pages/home.aspx

Reading the books Start with reading the introduction and the conclusion, and look at the table of contents. If the text is an article, read the first and last paragraphs. Then read the book, taking notes as you read. A monograph will have a red thread running through the book. A book of contributions will be made of several small articles, each with its main point – but ideally these are linked by a common problematique. Think about finding book reviews of the books if the red thread is not clear. If you are lost: get in touch well in advance to discuss the books! misuon@utu.fi

Questions Two kinds of questions: one general, one specific. You choose the one you want, most of the time there will be a panel of those in the questions asked. Open questions, closed questions Example: Odysseus: Open question: Ulysse loses his compagnons along his journey. Elaborate on the signification of this. Closed question: While Ulysse navigates, what happens in Ithaca? Closed and open question: Describe the role of the Gods in Ulysse’s journey, and elaborate on the signification of this role Important to organize your thoughts clearly and understandably USE ELEMENTS FROM THE BOOKS! “General culture” answers not drawing on the book’s content will get a bad grade. ANSWER THE QUESTION!

To find the books: The Nelli –portal through the website of the University library Browsing libraries in Turku E-books The textbook library of the Faculty of Social Sciences In the Educarium building ASK! Last possibility: the copy of the exam’s teacher. Buying the books? Any questions? Ask… misuon@utu.fi T19 on the campus map (Tuesday 15-16)
