Virus Lecture
3
Virus The nonliving Undead
4
Virus Characteristics About as big as a protein Basic Virus Anatomy 1. outer protein coat 2.Inner core of nucleic acid
5
Viruses cannot reproduce on their own
6
Kinds of Viruses: -Viruses cannot be stopped using antibiotics because they are non-living particles!
7
Virus reproduction They cannot reproduce outside of a living cell! Host specific – Rabbit viruses only infect specific rabbit spp – HIV only infects certain white blood cells They cannot reproduce outside of a living cell!
8
Virus Reproduction 1.) attach to host cell 2.) viral DNA or RNA enters cell 3.) viral DNA or RNA codes for proteins and enzymes of the virus
9
Lytic vs Lysogenic Lysogenic – latent period – not actively producing viruses Lytic – producing more viruses… like crazy!
12
Retrovirus Viruses that carry RNA Also have enzyme called reverse transcriptase RNA DNA, Than DNA is incorporated into host’s DNA,
