Race and Ethnicity Race and Ethnicity are often confused and how geographers use the terms differ from how others may use it Ethnicity - identity with a group of people who share the cultural traditions of a particular homeland or hearth Race - identity with a group of people who share a believed physical characteristic

Ethnicity Ethnicity interest Geographers more than race because ethnicity is tied to a place rather than to biology Two most numerous ethnicities in the United States are Latinos (15%) and African Americans (13%) –5% Asian and 1% American Indian

Race Traits that characterize race are those that are transmitted genetically from parents to children –Ex. Lactose Intolerance According to the 2010 Census –72% Americans are White –13% Black –5% Asian –7% Other Races –3% Two or More Races

Racism Racism- the belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities, and that biological differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race –Very little biological diversity in the human race due to the lack of isolation of humans Racist- is a person who subscribes to the beliefs of racism
