Tuesday, October 5 th Please collect your science notebook in the back of the room before class starts! How do you eat an Oreo cookie? Do you bite into the side, or do you twist it apart? Any milk dunkers out there?
2
Notebook and Project Scores Learning Set 2 – Understand the problem Criteria & Constraints – Write a procedure – Investigate & record data – Share results – Analyze results Agenda
3
Do you like cookies? Do you like sandwich, or filled cookies? What do you like about cookies like this? Have you ever seen these cookies with extra filing? What is good about these? What might be a problem with lots of filling? Think – Pair - Share
4
How do scientists work together to solve problems?

The Sandwich-Cookie Challenge (Read: DIV 25)

“This company has asked us to figure out how much filling will go on a cookie. There’s a catch: three different labs are doing tests, and only the one with the most reliable results will get the project for their factory, which will bring in jobs. Today you are going to give this a try and see what kind of results you get. ” Teacher Talk

The Cookie Challenge10/5/10 Materials: water, penny, pipette, towel Procedure: (In your own words, write how you will run your investigation) Count how many drops of water fit on a penny before it overflows. Run this procedure 5 times. Dry off your penny before you start the next trial. 8 Criteria: How many drops of filling can be placed on the cookie before it overflows? Constraints: Materials 10 minutes Results: Trial 1 = Trial 2 = Trial 3 = Trial 4 = Trial 5 = Summary:

Share Your Data Last time you communicated your work, each group presented in a Solution Briefing. This time you will do it differently. Each person will report their results (number of drops that fit on a penny) to the class. You will record each group’s results in a line plot. The line plot will help you see if your class has accurately determined the correct amount of filling for the cookie. This is what the cookie company is looking for.

The Cookie Challenge10/5/10 Materials: water, penny, pipette, towel Procedure: (In your own words, write how you will run your investigation) Line Plot: a display of data where each item is shown as an “X” above its value on the line Distribution: spread of numbers 8 Criteria: How many drops of filling can be placed on the cookie before it overflows? Constraints: Materials 10 minutes Results: Trial 1 = Trial 2 = Trial 3 = Trial 4 = Trial 5 = Summary:

Results How many drops of filling can be placed on the cookie before it overflows? Why don’t our results work?

Reflection 1. Homework: Complete the reflection sheet with your science partner and/or table. 2. Create a “flipper” for each handout: - fold the paper in half so you can still see the title - tape in your notebook on page 8 spread 3. Summary: “How do scientists work together to solve problems”?
