Found in rainforests of Southeastern Madagascar. Restricted to primary rainforests. Elevations of up to 600-1,400m.

Feeds on new shoots, leaf bases and creepers of endemic giant bamboo. Shares habitat with other lemurs. Females give birth to one, occasionally 2, around November- December. Head and body length- 28-45 cm.

Social animal- 2-6 individuals in the group. Most active at dawn and dusk. Bamboo has a high level of cyanide and the lemurs has evolved to be resistant against the cyanide.

The lemur is being threatened by agriculture and timber extraction. Hunted for food. Pet trade.

Around 1,000 lemurs estimated to be left. Maybe a little more that are unaccounted for.

Critically endangered. There is a conservation but agriculture is encroaching the wildlife parks. Kept in wildlife parks but are still being hunted.
