Biology Bowie High School 2015-2016 Mr. Mayfield Make sure you pick up all papers on the way in. Find your assigned seat. When you get to your seat, fill in the information on the student information sheet and safety contract. (Pre-AP only) Turn in summer work notebooks in the crate with your period on it. Then read the syllabus.

Introductions - Go around the table and everyone say their name, their favorite vegetable, and their favorite holiday. Person whose birthday is the soonest goes first.

Notes about the syllabus. - Big Three: 1) Don’t be tardy! 2) Cell Phone use is not allowed except for educational use! 3) No food and drink in class! - Behavior Log, Tardy Log, Tutoring Log Any Questions?

Required for class: - One Composition Book: 100 Sheets, 200 pages, wide or college-ruled (college preferred) - Pens and Pencils - Suggested donation: Box of Kleenex, package of glue sticks, and/or package of index cards * Bringing a notebook is a daily grade. 20 points deducted every class late after Fri Aug 28/Mon Aug 31

First Homework: - Make sure you have done the summer work!! If you haven’t, you need to do that now (tonight!) - Summer Work Quiz- Tuesday, Sept. 1 st (Test is open note) - You need to sign up for topic conferences. Come with the 2 topics you have come up with over the summer and your personal interests (in and outside of science). Make sure to be brainstorming ideas that are complex and have real world application. Sign up sheets will be posted on Thursday.

Homework: Get safety contract signed by parents! (Also a daily grade)

Lab Groups: - The people sitting at the same table as you are your lab partners for this six weeks. Your lab group is the letter at your table. - Seating arrangements and lab partners will change periodically.

Marshmallow Challenge: - 20 sticks of dry spaghetti - 1 yard of string - 1 yard of masking tape - 1 marshmallow

Rules: 1. Build the tallest freestanding structure 2. The entire marshmallow must be on top 3. Use as much of the kit as you want. 4. You may break up the spaghetti or cut the tape or string. 5. You cannot use the box the kit is in. 6. The challenge lasts 18 minutes.

- Your teachers will measure your structures. - One person in each group write your height on the data table on the board. - Then everybody go to your seat.

- How could you turn the Marshmallow Challenge into an experiment? - What are different variables you could test?

In this class, we will practice writing a lab report. One important part of writing a lab report is writing a detailed procedure (step-by-step instructions) for the experiment you are testing.

Coli bacteria grow fastest at 38 degrees Celcius. D and H Advil works the best at relieving a headache. I Brightly colored fish would reproduce slower than dull colored fish in a pond.
