Polymerization
2
Polymerization A polymer is a giant molecule formed by the covalent bonding together of repeating smaller molecules called monomers monomer + monomer → polymer
3
Polymerization One method of creating these polymers is by addition polymerization. Addition polymerization is the joining together of unsaturated (multiple bond) monomers. Double bonds have been turned into single bonds. No atoms are lost. The monomers have just been joined in the process of addition.
4
Polymerization CH2=CH2 Ethene is a monomer. It is also called ethylene. If we have four of these monomers join by addition, we would get CH3-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH3 Called polyethylene. Polyethylene is used in plastic bags, plastic containers, and plastic toys.
5
Polymerization PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is found in plastic wrap, simulated leather, water pipes, and garden hoses. It is formed from vinyl chloride monomers. CH2=CHCl
