1
THE CREATION OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM By Gabriella Lopez
2
Components of the Solar System Our Solar System is made out of rock, gases, ice and dust.. There are four terrestrial or rocky planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars And there are jovian or gas planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune
3
Planets and rotation All the planets but Venus and Uranus rotates counter-clockwise But it is believed that Venus is actually rotating counter-clockwise. It is believed that Venus was hit by an asteroid and turned upside down. Making the planet appear to be rotating clockwise
4
The Planets and Revolutions All of the planets Revolve around the sun All the planets revolve at different speeds. Due to the suns gravitational pull Thus the planets closest to the sun revolve faster
5
The planets and orbit All of the planets orbit the sun All the planets orbit on an elliptical plane Pluto orbits on a plane 15 degrees from the normal orbit
6
The age of our Solar System Scientists believe that the solar system is 4.6 billion years old Scientists concluded this by testing the age of meteorites, the oldest dating back to 4.6 billion years old
7
Formation of the Solar System The solar system was formed clouds of dust and gas was disturbed by a near by supernova. The force of the supernova made the gas and dust push away then a center point was formed and the gravitational pull forced the gas and dust particles to collect around it The particles started to clump together and asteroids/comets were formed In the center point the sun formed and blew a solar wind into the universe this enable the surrounding celestial bodies to orbit the center (Sun)
8
comets Comets are small icy rock particles Comets travel through the solar system Comets can vary in size, some comets can be the size of a baseball while others can be the size of a small portion of the moon Comets are “shooting stars”
9
asteroids Asteroids are small celestial bodies Most of the asteroids are in the asteroid belt, most of the asteroids travel in groups The largest asteroid in the solar system is Ceres, its 580 miles wide
10
meteoroids Meteoroids are pieces of rock or metal that come through the Earth’s atmosphere Meteoroids vary in size Meteoroids can form from comets or when asteroids collide Meteoroids can be found all around Earth
