Our Solar System

Earth is just one of many bodies in Our Solar System. Our Solar System is Made up of the Sun and all of the objects that orbit around it.

The objects that orbit the sun include, but are not limited to, the eight planets and their moons, the stars, asteroids, and comets.

The Solar System is broken up into the inner and outer solar system. Separating the two parts is the asteroid belt. The asteroid belt occupies the orbit between Mars and Jupiter. It is composed mainly of rocky and metallic non-volatile minerals.

Question One Which of the following is a part of the solar system? a.The SunThe Sun b.Jupiter’s moonsJupiter’s moons c.The constellationsThe constellations d.All of the aboveAll of the above

Question Two Where would one find the asteroid belt? a.Near the sunNear the sun b.Between Neptune and PlutoBetween Neptune and Pluto c.Between Mars and JupiterBetween Mars and Jupiter d.In the Milky WayIn the Milky Way

The Planets

The inner planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. The inner planets have solid, rocky crusts and are referred to as the “rocky” planets. They also have extremely hot to warm temperatures because they are close to the Sun.

The outer planets are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. The outer planets are know as the “gas giants.” All of the outer planets have many moons.

The farther a planet is from the Sun, the longer it takes for the planet to orbit the Sun. The length of time it takes for a planet to make one complete orbit around the sun, is the length of that planets year. Earth’s year = 365 Days Neptune’s year = 60,190 Days

Question One True or false: Earth is considered a “gas giant”. a. True True b. False False

Question Two The closer a planet to the sun? a. The shorter the day. The shorter the day. The shorter the day. b. The colder it is. The colder it is. The colder it is. c. The shorter the year. The shorter the year. The shorter the year. d. The more moons it has. The more moons it has. The more moons it has.

Objects In Space Just kidding….not those objects

The different looks of the moon are known as phases. The moon has 8 phases, the new moon, waning crescent, third quarter, waning gibbous, full moon, waxing gibbous, first quarter, and waxing crescent. These phases are due to the amount of light, from the sun, that is hitting the moon at a given time.

Use the diagram to help understand the different phases of out moon.

Comets are like “dirty snowballs”. They are made up of rock, dust, and ice. When comets come near the Sun, they reflect the light and can be seen in the sky. We can see Halley’s comet every 76 years.

Meteors are space rock that burn in outer space. Meteors are also known as shooting stars. Although most meteors burn up before ever touching ground, some do make it into a planet’s atmosphere creating craters on the planet’s surface. When a meteor hits ground, it is then known as a meteorite

Constellations are patterns of stars that appear in the sky. Scientists have named more than 88 constellations. The constellation most popular in our sky is known as the Big Dipper.

Question One True or false: Comets are sometimes called shooting stars. a. True True b. false false

Question Two What makes a meteor different from a meteorite? a. nothing, they are the same. nothing, they are the same. nothing, they are the same. b. A meteor is larger than a meteorite. A meteor is larger than a meteorite. A meteor is larger than a meteorite. c. A meteor can be seen but a meteorite can not. A meteor can be seen but a meteorite can not. A meteor can be seen but a meteorite can not. d. A meteorite hits ground but a meteor does not. A meteorite hits ground but a meteor does not. A meteorite hits ground but a meteor does not.

About the Author I am a fifth grade teacher at Lakeland Elementary. I have been teaching for 5 years, but just recently started teaching Science for most of the day. My favorite aspect of science is Astronomy, and I love making these hyperlinked power points with my students each year. It is a project they really enjoy.
