3 Student Objectives Upon completion of this class meeting, you should be able to: Start, configure, and work with SmartFTP Access your website through HTTP and through FTP

4 File Management Local machine: Windows Explorer Get there through either  My Documents  My Computer Works best if configured for development  Navigate to c:\  Change settings View | Explorer Bar | Folders View | Details Tools | Folder Options | View Advanced settings Uncheck “Hide extensions for known file types” Click on “Apply to All Folders” On the server: FTP...

5 Using SmartFTP Enables transferring files between computers Upload/download Client to server / server to client Assumes Local files stored in My Documents Server files stored in public_html Process Start by navigating through Start | Programs | SmartFTP |... Open connection to server (enter values into textboxes)  Host: www.suse1.astate.edu  Login (lower case) : your last name plus hyphen plus first initial  Password (mixed case): first 4 characters of your first name plus $ last 3 digits of your student number  Port: 21 Open “Local Browser” and navigate to My Documents Navigate server to public_html Tile windows horizontally Transfer files: select file or folder and then click on arrow button

6 URLs to Note Your website (home page): http://www.suse1.astate.edu/~UserID ftp://www.suse1.astate.edu  What you see is your root directory  The files that show up at your website are in the public_html directory (aka your webroot) Note the difference One’s open access (to the whole world) The other requires a login
