ELECTRICIDADE DE MOÇAMBIQUE 1 Discovering and embarking on low cost technologies Electricidade de Moçambique, E.P March 2006 Low Cost Technologies for Rural Electrification Presented by: João M. Catine Project Manager for a WB funded project
2
ELECTRICIDADE DE MOÇAMBIQUE 2 key statistics about electrification The population is 18 million people; The density is 20/km2; The electrification rate is approximately 7%; About 60 towns have grid supply; About 70 towns are supplied by Gen Sets; towns still have no access to electricity. ELECTRICIDADE DE MOÇAMBIQUE 3 Overview of geographical coverage
4
ELECTRICIDADE DE MOÇAMBIQUE 4 Overview of national networks Actual
5
ELECTRICIDADE DE MOÇAMBIQUE 5 Reasons for low electrification level High level of investment costs due to use of conventional systems in rural electrification; High level of unit costs per connection due to low population density in rural areas; Until recently, it was difficult to implement low-cost electrification due to lack of knowledge of the associated technologies
6
ELECTRICIDADE DE MOÇAMBIQUE 6 Recent lessons and current actions towards implementation of low cost technologies The WB under ESMAP and ERAP have enabled the following actions to take place: Low cost workshop in Maputo at early 2005; Study tour in Ghana in the middle of 2005; SWS pilot project to an existing HT line; Low cost electrification master plan is due to start.
7
ELECTRICIDADE DE MOÇAMBIQUE 7 Key challenges for implementation of low cost technologies Lack of standards, guidelines, specifications, manuals; Lack of knowledge and expertise by traditional consultants; Successful implemention of the SWS pilot project; Successful preparation of the low cost electrification master plan; Training of energy sector staff.
