12 12 Understanding Workshops Workshop themes Topical (Sample) Biology Health-care Privacy Social Media Sustainability Training Scanning is utilized by corporations to train team members to think proactively about the future. Workshop goals Identify potential trends, opportunities, and threats. Identify emerging product and service opportunities. Share strategic thought across departments. Connect social developments with product needs and manufacturing functions.

13 13 Best Practices A global car manufacturer has inaugurated a monthly Scan meeting with revolving members to allow improved communication between departments and uncover strategic opportunities. A North American CPG company has a team monitoring the business, technological, and market environments. They use Scan to supplement its information, find missing data points, and identify topics of interest. A global consumer-electronics company has integrated Scan meetings into R&D operations to identify social trends that could open up opportunities for new market segments or products. A North American insurance company holds internal Scan meetings and sends employees to open SBI meetings to identify potential long-term trends early. It then assigns identified topics to company researchers. A number of Scan clients hold quarterly scoped meetings with SBI consultants on thematic issues in order to identify disruptions in their business reality.

14 14 The Bottom Line Scan provides insights into technology, commerce, and cultural issues which are outside the scope of a client’s area of expertise. Decision-makers turn to SBI to separate the hype from reality when identifying and evaluating opportunities and threats emerging from outside their core competencies. Scan offers companies an early jump on the future – often resulting in competitive advantage.
