GIST-26 03-04 May 2007 Page 2 MSG Primary Satellite MET-9 (MSG-2) satellite Image & Product Validation Review (IPVR) has concluded that the MET-9 satellite is ready to assume the role as primary imaging satellite. MET-9 was declared the primary satellite 11 April 2007 after a period of 1 month of parallel operations with MET-8 (MSG-1).

GIST-26 03-04 May 2007 Page 3 Rapid Scan Service (1) EUMETSAT intend to use the back-up satellite from Jan 2008 to continue the Rapid Scan service provided by MTP from MET-8 located at 9.5º E, rectified to 9.5º E or 10º E. The rapid scan service will provide rapid scan cycles (RSC) over the upper third of the earth disk in 5 minute intervals. The following pattern has been selected as baseline: 11 sets of 26 days RSC + 2 days BRC, followed by 1 set of 28 days BRC. With BRC being the baseline (15 min) repeat cycle. SEVIRI data will only be available from the back-up satellite during RSC periods via EUMETCAST. All data will be available from UMARF.

GIST-26 03-04 May 2007 Page 4 Rapid Scan Service (2) The BRC full disk coverage periods will be timed to coincide with predicted outages of the primary satellite due to such things as decontamination or manoeuvres. 12-19 Feb 2007 the rapid scan service was successfully tested on MET-9 (MSG-2) at 0º Further rapid scan trials are planned for the rest of 2007 gradually building up to the full service. The next trials are planned for 11-28 May 2007 and 1 June – 31 August 2007.

GIST-26 03-04 May 2007 Page 5 MSG-3 satellite (no change) Due to unavailability of vacuum test facility, the MSG-4 AIT activities have been delayed. The MSG-3 activities have been re-started to correct issues and to complete open items raised at its Pre-Storage Review. An anomaly on the SEVIRI TM read-out has delayed the entry into storage. Launch planning: In July 2006, the EUMETSAT Council agreed to re-plan the MSG-3 launch for January 2011. In case of outcomes from the LCL failure investigations leading to an early launch, Delegates will be informed accordingly, and launch date will be revisited. GERB-3 need date for satellite re-integration is January 2009 or earlier depending upon the LCL investigations. GERB-3 recalibration needs to be completed latest by end 2008.

GIST-26 03-04 May 2007 Page 6 MSG-4 satellite A confidence test between GERB-4 & MSG-4 has been performed. The instrument is currently integrated on MSG-4. The Pre-storage Review (PSR) has been initiated and the final report is under preparation. In July 2006, the EUMETSAT Council agreed to re-plan the MSG-4 launch in the mid-2012/mid-2013 time frame. To be defined at the time of MSG-3 destorage – Jan 2013 is used for planning purpose. GERB-4 need date for satellite integration is April 2009, as a spare for GERB-3.

GIST-26 03-04 May 2007 Page 7 GERB-1 (no change) Commissioning of GERB-1 (on MSG-2) completed. GERB-1 exhibits an unstable period on leaving SAFE mode that leads to a mispointing in NORMAL mode. The effect is self correcting after the mispointing event has occurred. This imposes a constraint on sun avoidance operations (in case of transition to safe mode). A data corruption anomaly is currently under investigation. GERB-1 is in SAFE mode for the sun avoidance season.

GIST-26 03-04 May 2007 Page 8 GERB-2 System ARB into the in-orbit detector damage – the final report has been issued in April 2007. Sun avoidance patch (patch 8) incompatibility with SNOOZE mode still under investigation.

GIST-26 03-04 May 2007 Page 9 GERB-3 GERB-3 IEU has been returned to RAL for implementation of timing board modifications. The GERB-3 IOU QFM is to be repaired.

GIST-26 03-04 May 2007 Page 10 GERB-4 Detectors: FM#3 detector damaged and is now to be replaced by FM#2. Proposal for detector Humidity Test approved. Proposal for recalibration of GERB-3 detector to be considered. Quartz Filter Mechanism (QFM): Rebuild and re-integration indicate the problem has been solved.
