2. What is a verb?  A verb is a word that expresses an action or a state of being.  Every sentence has at least one verb.

4. Action Verbs are Main Verbs Action verbs are strong enough to be used in sentences all by themselves. I love cheese. I turned the page. An action verb tells what the subject is doing.

5. Linking Verbs are also Main Verbs Linking Verbs, which are forms of “to be,” are also strong enough to be used in sentences all by themselves. I am a student. Mrs. Kilbourne is our teacher. These verbs are called linking verbs because they link the subject of a sentence with another word in the sentence. A linking verb will equate the subject with the verb.

6. There are only 13 linking verbs,  be, am, is, are, was, were, been, being  appear, become, feel, grow, look, seem, remain, smell, sound, stay, taste, turn but most of these linking verbs can also act as action verbs. Remember: A linking verb will equate the subject with the verb. An action verb will not, rather an action verb tells what the subject is doing.
