They were recruited as workers by the Australian government to replace the many thousands of Australian men who had been killed in the First World War (1914–1918). When he was out there Frank married an Australian girl and lived the rest of his life in Australia. What do they have in common? 1

It tells us that he was born in Palmyra (the country we now call Syria). He joined the Roman army and was sent to Britain. He spent the rest of his life there. He married a British girl. She changed her name to Regina, a popular Roman girl’s name. When she died, Barates made her a beautiful carved tombstone. You can see both their tombstones in a museum in Newcastle. She became famous as a healer and helped British soldiers who were based in Jamaica. When a war began between Britain and Russia she left Jamaica and travelled thousands of miles to the Crimea to help the British soldiers. Later she lived in London where she died in 1881.
