Session C-10 Test Drive the ISIR Analysis Tool and Improve Verification David Rhodes Anne Tuccillo U.S. Department of Education Derek Kalm Vangent

2 Session Objectives To learn about a tool to help improve verification To run reports and complete exercises using the ISIR Analysis Tool demo site To learn new approaches for identifying parameters for selecting records for Federal and/or discretionary verification To have some fun!

3 Questions to Address What tool can I use to quickly and easily improve verification procedures and consumer information? Can I make federal verification more focused? WIIFM ?

Who to Verify vs. How to Verify “The beginning of knowledge is the discovery of something we do not understand. “ –Frank Herbert US science fiction novelist (1920 - 1986)Frank Herbert

5 Test Drive The ISIR Analysis Tool What is it? Demo site Production site

Exercise 1: Log in to FAA Access Demo System Open Internet Explorer – select “FAFSA Demo Site” from the favorites menu, or Type http://fafsademo.test.ed.gov in the address barhttp://fafsademo.test.ed.gov Enter the user name (eddemo) and password (fafsatest) found in your booklet Complete the exercise

Exercise 2: Home page and Navigation Home page features Left navigation bar Complete the exercise

Exercise 3: Dashboard The “Dashboard”- all systems go? Two reports Drilling down Complete exercise 3

Exercise 4 – Standard Reports and Filters 8 standard reports Filters help to focus on specific populations/criteria Field change report – the gateway to analysis Complete exercise 4

Discussion - Exercise 4 Improve educational outreach? Does CPS target? Do you verify more than 30%? Improved consumer info =< corrections to ISIR fields

Exercise 5 – EFC Impact Which ISIR fields change most? What EFC ranges have the most change? Is there a connection? Complete exercise 5

Discussion –Exercise 5 Should verification focus on records that experience little or no change? –How much does it cost your office to verify a student? –How many students choose to forgo financial aid when documentation is required?

Things to Consider –Exercise 5 Do you focus on records with little or no change? –To find out upload your data into the Tool and look at the Verification Summary Report –Among QA Program Schools in a recent study 52% of CPS selected records had no change to EFC

Exercise 6 – Put the Pedal to the Metal Hit the open road and test drive the tool on your own! Read the scenario Run reports and analyze results Use the “clues” to stay on course

Discussion - Exercise 6 Can the data help the school improve its approach to verification? What about discretionary verification?

Things to Consider - Exercise 6 Can the data help? –Non-zero EFC, Pell eligible –Drill down for more “clues” Field Increment Report Student Listing Report Student Detail Report Discretionary verification? –Need to set school flag in Tool –Analyze the same as CPS

Reports Available in the ISIR Analysis Tool If time permits… Match the correct report with the appropriate research question addressed
