Location of research: Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Industrial Technology. Duration of project (not more than 12 months): 12 months B(iii)Proposal ( Please include flow chart of research and list of research undertaken and the publications published related to the project) (a) Background In length and dimensional measurements, thermal variation play a critical role that affected the result of measurements. This is the basic theory of metrology where the length to be measured (measurand) will change with the change of temperature. This phenomenon caused by the theory of thermal expansion of the material. The theory states that at ordinary temperature, the molecules or atom in material vibrate with a small amplitude. As temperature increases, the amplitude of atom in material will increases. Thus cause the overall object as a whole to expand. The length change is proportional to the temperature change. The constant of proportionality is called coefficient of thermal expansion. ISO TC -213 and international practices in industrial metrology have chosen 20°C as a standard reference temperature in all length and dimensional measurement and calibrations. Therefore the environmental control conditions needed in measurement and inspection laboratory related to length and dimensional measurement not only to make sure the temperature is at 20°C but most important is to make sure it remains stable at 20°C. (b) Problem Statement In today’s challenge in quality control industry, there are rising needed for in site measurements and inspection in production line. As a result, length and dimensional metrology equipment including height gauge are more needed to be placed at shop floor in production process environment rather than in control temperature environment. Thus results of measurement in non standard temperature and thermal variation will theoretically differ with results of measurement in standard reference temperature environment. (c) Objective To study practically the significant effect of measurements in different temperature by using height gauge equipments. (d) Research Methodology Series of experiments will be conducted in different conditions of temperature which is in standard reference temperature and non standard temperature. The data then will be analyzed.. (e) Expected Outcomes Analyzed data will be expected to show either significant or not the effect of measurement in different temperature thus derive to the importance finding to our quality control industry. Available at respective Institute/Faculty
