Review

Evaluate the effectiveness of evaluation criteria entries. Apply critique to your own entries and revise.

Since you have the final version of your research/Works Cited and a draft of your paper due for class on Monday, let’s take this time to review some overarching questions to ensure you get the most points possible. We will review formatting as well as issues of quality

What is the thesis template for an evaluation argument? Something is a good/bad example of _____________ because if fits/doesn’t fit criterion A, B, C.

What other argument style we have written does this template resemble? Definition Argument

How can I be realistic/effective in my criterion? Something cannot really be the best movie of all time if all I am discussing is the use of black and white, correct grammar in subtitles, etc. because the majority of movies do not have those features. You CAN discuss relatability or emotional impact of a film and use the use of black and white v. color to argue that. For example, Schindler’s List uses this color contrast device to help the viewer identify with and, therefore, emotionally connect with the plight of the little girl in the red coat.

How can I ensure that my criterion is well-developed and fully proven? Remember that you must back up your statements with evidence from other viewers or reviewers of the film arguing that they felt the same way as you. Your opinion alone is not enough to argue criteria. I cannot just make blanket value judgments about criterion and assume everyone agrees. That is a logical fallacy of hasty generalization—the idea that, just because something is true for me, it must be true in all instances and for everyone. Use a variety of sources and watch out for logical fallacies in your own argument and in those of others when you reach the peer review stage. Remember which online sources are more reliable. I.e. If I am researching cultural impact of a film and one website choice is a.net and the other is a.edu from a well-respected university, I need to use the respected source. Don’t JUST pick, read, and use the first source you come across.

Directions: When shown the following slides, evaluate the entries as Ineffective Moderately Effective Effective Be sure to justify your rating with reasons!!!!

--Criterion: Cultural Impact This article states that Jewish education is weak for U.S. Jewish children and that Spielberg’s movie uses both the feel of a documentary and well-respected creators/artists to “good effect” (http://articles.philly.com/1994-05- 13/news/25828728_1_american-jews-american-film- holocaust).http://articles.philly.com/1994-05- 13/news/25828728_1_american-jews-american-film- holocaust

--Criterion: Faithfulness to the Original Source/History The film Schindler’s List is based upon the book of the same name by Thomas Keneally, published in 1935 (http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/6900.Thomas_Kene ally). However, this original text is a fictional work and is listed in the Library of Congress as such (http://www.ihr.org/jhr/v14/v14n3p-7_Raven.html). On the other hand, other historical documents were used to make the movie more realistic (http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L- 4004470,00.html).http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/6900.Thomas_Kene allyhttp://www.ihr.org/jhr/v14/v14n3p-7_Raven.htmlhttp://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L- 4004470,00.html

-- Criterion: Cultural Impact “Steven Spielberg then found the book a perfect vehicle for the kind of morality tale at which he excels. He has said that he felt a special responsibility for taking up the subject as a Jew, but the film has a quintessentially American flavor.” (http://articles.philly.com/1994-05- 13/news/25828728_1_american-jews-american-film- holocaust)http://articles.philly.com/1994-05- 13/news/25828728_1_american-jews-american-film- holocaust

-- Criterion: Faithfulness to the Original Source/History The film Schindler’s List is based upon a variety of accurate and verified historical documents, most now owned by Yad Vashem, which were used to make the movie more realistic (http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L- 4004470,00.html). Those verified sources include such documents as the list of the 1200 workers saved by Oskar Schindler composed one month before the war ended (http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/Holocaust/Schindlerslist.html), letters written from Oskar Schindler to director Dr. Ball-Kaduri at Yad Vashem revealing Schindler’s personal characteristics we see portrayed in the film (i.e. “In judging my actions, I want people to keep in mind, that in all my decisions, I acted as a free human being who had everything life could offer. In critical and hopeless situations, I was often able to inspire weaker characters and pull them along with me”) (http://www.jewishgen.org/Yizkor/Schindler/sch001.html), and, as discussed by Dr. Robin O’Neil (investigator of Nazi war crimes and lecturer at various universities across Europe), the Madritsch list and the Davar list – which trace Schindler’s activities from 1938-1945– were also used as sources for the film (http://www.jewishgen.org/Yizkor/Schindler/sch002.html#7d).http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L- 4004470,00.htmlhttp://www.jewishgen.org/Yizkor/Schindler/sch001.htmlhttp://www.jewishgen.org/Yizkor/Schindler/sch002.html#7d

--Criterion: Cultural Impact This article states that Jewish education is weak for U.S. Jewish children and that Spielberg’s movie uses both the feel of a documentary and well-respected creators/artists to “good effect” (http://articles.philly.com/1994-05- 13/news/25828728_1_american-jews-american-film-holocaust).http://articles.philly.com/1994-05- 13/news/25828728_1_american-jews-american-film-holocaust Rating: Ineffective Why: The entry does not fully explain nor explore the topic. How does this entry prove cultural impact? It doesn’t even explain what the film contributes to the revealed issue of a weak Jewish educational foundation…

--Criterion: Faithfulness to the Original Source/History The film Schindler’s List is based upon the book of the same name by Thomas Keneally, published in 1935 (http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/6900.Thomas_Keneally). However, this original text is a fictional work and is listed in the Library of Congress as such (http://www.ihr.org/jhr/v14/v14n3p- 7_Raven.html). What documents? Give specifics.

-- Criterion: Cultural Impact “Steven Spielberg then found the book a perfect vehicle for the kind of morality tale at which he excels. He has said that he felt a special responsibility for taking up the subject as a Jew, but the film has a quintessentially American flavor.” (http://articles.philly.com/1994-05- 13/news/25828728_1_american-jews-american-film- holocaust)http://articles.philly.com/1994-05- 13/news/25828728_1_american-jews-american-film- holocaust Rating: Ineffective Why: The entry only gives a quote with no analysis. How does a “morality tale” relate to cultural impact? How does the film have a “quintessentially American flavor” and what does THAT mean for cultural impact?

-- Criterion: Faithfulness to the Original Source/History The film Schindler’s List is based upon a variety of accurate and verified historical documents, most now owned by Yad Vashem, which were used to make the movie more realistic (http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4004470,00.html). The entry uses a variety of sources, analyzes the topic, and provide concrete examples/statistics for support and use within the paper itself.

 Finish all research and writing of research entries (Print today OR submit next class)  Type your MLA Works Cited page based upon your research entries (Use your GRCA MLA ch. 20 OR Purdue OWL as an online MLA source to check formatting!!!!!!)  Print your Works Cited and submit today OR bring to submit next class  Draft your essay for class on Monday.
