Analyze a poem for the author’s use of literary devices to explain how specific stylistic choices support the development of tone and theme. Develop strategies for organizing ideas.

Take out your notebook and have the homework from Activity 1.10 ready for me to grade! I will walk by as you do the activity below and grade your homework… In the SpringBoard section of your notebook, answer the question on p. 53 about quilts. What do you know about them? Read the blue section labeled “About the Author” to learn more about Teresa Paloma Acosta to add to your answer.

As a class, we will read the poem My Mother Pieced Quilts. Your mission: underline any lines that you think are particularly important in establishing the meaning of the quilts to the speaker. I do: I will read the poem first 2 paragraphs and help you find examples of imagery in the first 13 lines. We do: As we read the poem again, find more examples of imagery that help you relate to the speaker.

Now it’s your turn! On your own, complete the following assignment: 1) On pp. 44-45, answer the Key Ideas and Details questions in the margins. You will have 20 minutes for this, and then we will discuss! 2) Go to p. 56. We will be discussing the SIFT chart and how to complete it. Finish it on your own by the end of the class!

Look at the synthesis writing prompt at the bottom of p. 57. You are asked to answer one of the following questions in at least one paragraph. Be sure to reference the poem My Mother Pieced Quilts in your response: How do parents influence our perspectives on our culture? How do writers use symbolism to convey theme?
