Not a lot has changed; Traditional economies and occupations Farming done by hand; However, the Green Revolution has enabled more technology to reach villages More electricity, TVs, Urbanization is occurring in India at a rapid rate 2.47% annual rate of change (2010-15 est.) Improved health care is also raising the population, lowering the infant mortality rate

Even though untouchability has been outlawed, caste still governs many aspects of people’s lives Jobs, education, marriage in many cases Some changes have occurred People from different castes mix more freely Urbanization has helped, as people don’t know where others are from

Improving since independence From 10% literate to over 60% literate - age 15 and over can read and write More boys than girls attend, though male: 75.2%, female: 50.8% (2006 est.) Literacy also lower among lower-caste and rural people Jobs are also hard to come by Increasing population means government has to try and create more jobs 8.8% (2013 est.) -comparison to the world: 9898

Marriage customs are changing Arranged marriages still exist, but not as pervasive as in the past Some couples have more say in the matter Family structure changing Extended family less likely to live together Young couples don’t always move in to their parents house Women have gained some rights, but still occupy a subordinate position in many ways
