Strengthening Instructional Leadership in Mathematics Principals – January 8, 2015 9:00AM – 12:00PM
2
Outcomes Have the opportunity to share what is working in your school as you support your teachers in their efforts to 1)teach concepts using inquiry 2) incorporate problem solving as a routine Generate the needs of teachers and principals as they move forward Explore resources for inquiry in mathematics as well as resources for problem solving
3
Celebrations and Sharing of Strategies Think of ways that have succeeded in helping your teachers use more inquiry and problem solving in mathematics. Use your journal and write as many strategies as you can in five minutes. Choose what you consider to be the most successful strategy you have implemented as an instructional leader. Take three minutes to share that strategy. - person wearing the most blue shares first - person wearing the most white is timekeeper Whole group sharing One person at each table will share a strategy – either his or her own or one they found interesting.
4
Brainstorming Session Complete the form about challenges to the success of this type of math program at your school. Volunteers will offer what have been challenges at their sites. The group will help brainstorm possible solutions to this roadblock.

Principal Exploration Time Think of a teacher in your school who may be struggling with a particular area (the meaning of inquiry in mathematics, representations, questioning, problem solving, classroom management). With that teacher in mind, use your laptop or tablet to explore some of the sites listed in your handout. You can work alone, with a partner, or with a group of three. We will share discoveries on chart paper at the end of the exploration session.
