Social Studies Power helps you: 1) teach social studies content using interactive, engaging tools 2) evaluate student learning with tracked, scored tests 3) support struggling readers and ELL students 4) improve students’ literacy skills

1) Teach Social Studies Content Social Studies Power offers 103 lessons, written on-level and below-level for struggling readers and ELLs. All lessons are correlated to state/provincial standards. Access the correlations on the site home page, lesson home page, or Teacher Center to ensure curriculum alignment. Textbook correlations are coming soon!

Inquiry Project Inquiry projects use investigation, research, and discussion to expand upon the lesson content.

Extension Activity The extension activity provides an extra lesson-related challenge for advanced students. These often use graphic organizers and student worksheets – all provided by World Book as easy PDF or Word document downloads.

Critical Thinking Questions Critical thinking questions prompt students to apply content learned from the lesson to new scenarios.

Interactive Quizzes Quizzes gauge students’ understanding of content and vocabulary in a fun, no-pressure environment.

Lesson Tests Assess students’ learning with the lesson test. Track scores to see where help is needed.

Explore More Links Access more information on related lesson content through editor-selected World Book Web links.

2) Evaluate Student Learning Set up classes in the Teacher Center to track student test results. Then view results by student or by class.

Tracked Tests Scores are cumulative, so you can see where your class needs more help. You also can address each student’s progress individually.

Reading Differentiated Texts Access lesson texts on unit home pages. Click the tan rectangle for the on-level text. Click the skyscape icon below it for the below-level text. Mouse over either icon to read the lesson’s summary and see its reading level.

4) Improve Literacy Skills Downloadable podcasts and audio read-aloud of the lesson text cultivate reading fluency. Pop-up glossary definitions assist contextual understanding. Differentiated lesson texts enable struggling readers and ELLs to access information at the appropriate reading level. Critical thinking questions support investigative learning and discussion. Extension activities challenge advanced students.

What else does the site offer? The Teacher Center includes curriculum correlations, graphic organizers, Teacher’s Guides, and Student Study Guides.

Map Skills The site also includes 9 lessons that teach basic geography and map skills, all written at a level appropriate for young learners. Each lesson includes related links, a quiz, interactive animations, and more!

Geography Games Interactive games focus on the regions and states/provinces of the United States, Australia, and Canada. Test students’ knowledge in a fun environment – they can print out their scores at the end!

Interactive Earth Teach further geographic content with all the tools in Interactive Earth, including the World Book Atlas, Interactive Maps, outlines of national and state/province maps and flags, and our Explore More section.

Local Resources Choose any region in the world to learn quick facts at a glance.

Ask a Historian! Ask a Historian is a video library of experts in their fields answering questions posed by students. Download the videos and display them full- screen. Submit your own question for World Book to answer through the Ask a Question box!

Important People Read biographies of important people throughout history to instill a human connection. These encourage students to learn more about events and advancements and the people behind them.
