Technical difficulties Checking Status

Scores on quizzes In-depth responses Participation in DQ Use of citations and references

 This unit covers the alternate care settings within the medical arena.  The content of outpatient and physician offices, as well as inpatient is discussed in this unit.  The requirements for health records in these settings are covered.

Please respond to the topic below and then review and respond to two of your classmates.  What are the reasons for the requirements of the health records covered in this unit?  What are the benefits for these requirements and guidelines?

 This unit covers data quality and the importance of quality health information.  The elements of data quality are covered as well as data mining and data warehousing.

 Read Chapter 8, pp. 235-262 (Heath Care Data Sets)  Complete the following: Lab Manual exercise 8-2, pp.78-79 - 15 points Place in Drop Box – Unit 5  Complete the Quiz  Continue work on your term project.

Read my initial Post What role does the Health Information Management professional play in ensuring data quality?

DATA MINING  http://www.aaai.org/ojs/index.php/aima gazine/article/view/1230/1131. http://www.aaai.org/ojs/index.php/aima gazine/article/view/1230/1131 Pg. 39  Finding useful databases for identifying patterns in data AKA:  Knowledge extraction  Information Discovery  Information Harvesting  Data Archeology  Data Pattern Process  Mostly used by statistical professionals  Analysts  Research  Management Information Systems (MIS)

 A data warehouse is a collection of data from multiple sources  Integrated into a common repository and extended by summary information for the purpose of analysis. Two characteristics: (1) Derived information is present for the purpose of analysis. (2) The environment is dynamic, i.e. many updates occur. Data Warehousing

Healthcare providers have a responsibility to document thoroughly and in a timely manner. Unit 5 - DQ Name and explain three or four adverse affects that misleading, incomplete, or untimely documentation could have on patient care, facilities planning, reimbursement, or legally. 300 words

Assignment: Complete the following: Lab Manual exercise 8-2, pp.78-79 - 15 points Drop Box Quiz 5

 Indexes and registers (what are they, purpose, MPI kept permanently)  Automated master patient index consists of….  Cost of a manual (MPI) vs. automated MPI  A registry is used to collect and sort data and to perform statistical analysis and study.  Which agency is responsible for registration of vital events such as births  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is a federal agency that requires the reporting of information about diseases.

 Automated case abstracting systems allow facilities to calculate prospective payment system reimbursement.  A data dictionary  The Uniform Clinical Data Set  The Medical Information Bureau (MIB)  Most hospital statistics are collected using automated computer systems.

 Data Mining and Warehousing  Daily census count.  Physician index  A disease index organizes patient data according to ICD -9 CM disease codes  CPT and HCPCS  Local vital statistics office  National Practitioner Data Bank  How to calculate death rate (%)  What is ADT system? (not CPT codes)

 Case mix analysis  The purpose of an Alzheimer's registry (identify the group(s) that sponsor the registry).  Automated case abstracting systems facilitate a number of hospital functions (what are the functions?).  Define each of the following: 1. daily census count 2. daily inpatient census 3. average daily census.

 The quality improvement (QI) department needs to obtain a list of inpatients discharged within the last four months with a diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome. This information can be obtained from the Disease Index. ____________________________________________  The chief of surgery wants to determine the number of appendectomies (using a scope) and as open surgery for the last four months. This information can be obtained from the Procedure Index.

 Data collection (process by which data elements are accumulated)  Data consistency (reliability of data regardless of the way in which data is stored, displayed, or processed).  Indexes, registers, and registries are considered secondary sources of patient information.  Computer Interface (The exchange of data among multiple software products)  Manual MPI should be kept for 6 months after being converted to automated MPI

 A virtual tour of a hospital's health information department.  Paper health record and the methods of filing, storage, and retention requirements  Assigning a medical record number  Master Patient Index (MPI) is introduced – more in depth

 Past / upcoming assignments (viewing in Gradebook)  Words of encouragement  Review Unit 4  Introduce Unit 5  Unit 5 Quiz – study topics  Upcoming
