Hydrochloric Acid History of HCl: History of HCl: Hydrochloric Acid first appeared during the Renaissance and was then used by chemists in their scientific research. It did not become popular until the Industrial Revolution. At this time, massive amounts were produced but it was made by mixing Sulfuric Acid with Sodium Chloride and called Acidum Salts or Salt Acid. Interesting Facts: Interesting Facts: When Hydrochloric Acid combines with Magnesium, Hydrogen is produced. HCl is a very strong acid (corrosive). Hydrochloric Acid has been around for a very long time but was not popular until the Industrial Revolution when it was used to produce metals such as Tin and Titanium. This compound can be produced both naturally and by man. Physical Properties: Physical Properties: It is colorless, nonflammable, a gas, has an irritating pungent odor, and the melting point is usually between -18 & -26 degrees Celsius.

Model of Hydrochloric Acid Model of Hydrochloric Acid: Common Uses: making chlorides a refining ore when titanium or tin is being produced cleaning of metal products manufacturing fertilizers and dyes in the industries of photography, textile, and rubber as a pool chemical used in household cleaning products in the creation of many food preservatives.

Hydrochloric Acid Found in nature or man made?: Found in nature or man made?: Hydrochloric Acid can be naturally created and man-made. How it’s made: How it’s made: Naturally- HCl is produced in the stomach by cells automatically to maintain a helpful PH acidic balance while digesting. Man-made- It is created by dissolving hydrogen chloride in water through direct or organic synthesis. What does it react with?: What does it react with?: It dissolves many metals, forms oxidized metal chlorides and will react with basic elements/compounds (ex. Calcium & magnesium).

Hydrochloric Acid Toxic? Poisonous? Radioactive?: Toxic? Poisonous? Radioactive?: HCl is a poisonous and toxic gas! How much does it cost?: How much does it cost?: $55-$70/ton Type of Chemical Bond: Type of Chemical Bond: Covalent Other: Hydrochloric Acid is a very popular substance and is used in a variety of industries. About 20 million metric tons of it are produced every year. Drinking Hydrochloric Acid poisons the body. Since it is corrosive, it does immediate damage to the body and can burn easily. Breathing in or swallowing hydrochloric acid can cause severe damage to the body (abdominal pain, vomiting blood, shortness of breath, etc.)
