ITU-T 4 1-3 October 2003 Workshop on End-to-End Quality of Service. What is it? How do we get it? Some observations from previous ITU-T workshops Several workshops, held during the two last years, QoS issues have been addressed QoS issues "Multimedia convergence", has given a chance to initiate works to harmonize QoS actvities in ITU-T.See Session 3 of this Workshop "Satellites in IP & Multimedia", addresses needs for progress on QoS Signalling and TCP performance, and on definition of QoS classes (including video) "Telecommunications for Disaster Relief", has shown the difficulties occuring for QoS (and security) in multi-networks or multi-providers configurations, and in interworking beteen operators and ISPs. "Next Generation Networks : What, When and How?"addressed the needs for end to end QoS, and it is impossible to progress without partnership with other bodies. QoS requirements and End to end QoS architecture of the NGN Value added premium services with multi-level of QoS and end-to-end QoS.

ITU-T 5 1-3 October 2003 Workshop on End-to-End Quality of Service. What is it? How do we get it? Some observations from previous ITU-T workshops (2) More generally, needs To consider end to end QoS, including signalling and architecture To work on QoS classes and to adapt these classes to the different services and applications To progress on the definition and the use of metrics and on measurement techniques To take into account the user's perception To collaborate between SDOs, Fora,…to try to simplify the complete figure, instead of increasing the complexity. To take into account the economic aspects

ITU-T 6 1-3 October 2003 Workshop on End-to-End Quality of Service. What is it? How do we get it? Objectives of the workshop The Workshop is organized with the aim to create bridges between the different aspects of the quality of service and to fill the gaps in the standardization field. Another goal would be to find new areas for and improve collaboration among different standardization bodies in the field and to prepare the future works to be done in the QoS domains. Global snapshot of What Industry thinks about QoS will be given at the end of the Workshop. The accent will be put on "How do we get it?" aspect. The overall objectives of the workshop are: Harmonize the different approaches to common understanding of end-to-end QoS Identify obstacles to achieving end-end QoS Propose actions to overcome these obstacles Create bridges between different aspects of QoS
