Introduction to the Metric System Measurement and Unit Conversion

Basic Units Within the English system are basic units of measure! These units are as follows: Foot-for measuring length pound-for measuring mass Gallon-for measuring volume Second-for measuring time Fahrenheit-for measuring temperature

Basic Units Within the metric system are basic units of measure! These units are as follows: Meter-for measuring length Gram-for measuring mass Liter-for measuring volume Second-for measuring time Kelvin-for measuring temperature

Prefixes in the Metric System The metric system consists of six frequently used prefixes. They are as follows: Kilo-1000 (10 3 ) Hecto-100 (10 2 ) Deka-10 (10 1 ) Basic Unit-1(10 0 ) Deci-0.1(10 -1 ) Centi-0.01(10 -2 ) Milli-0.001 (10 -3 )

Prefixes in the Metric System Other prefixes that you probably know from working with computers are: Mega-1,000,000 (10 -6 ) and Giga-1,000,000,000 (10 -9 ). A mega-byte is one million bytes and a giga- byte is one billion bytes!!!

Prefixes in the Metric System Metric prefixes act as multipliers. For example-a kilometer is 1,000 meters and a kilogram is 1,000 grams. A centimeter is 0.01 meters (or 1/100 of a meter) and a centigram is 0.01 grams (or 1/100 of a gram. A millisecond is 0.001 seconds (or 1/1,000 of a second)

Prefixes in the Metric System Is there a simple way to keep up with all this if you’re lousy at math? Sure there is!! It is simply a matter of moving the decimal place. If the exponent is a positive number, move the decimal point to the left (to make the number smaller)!! If the exponent is a negative number, move the decimal point to the right (to make the number bigger)!!

Examples Question: 100 meters equals how many kilometers? Kilo means 10 3, so move the decimal 3 places to the left or 0.1 kilometers=1 meter. Question: One meter equals how many centimeters? Centi means 10-2, so move the decimal place 2 times to the right or 100 centimeters =

Memory Aid To help remember the prefixes in the metric system an anagram was created: King Henry Died Monday Drinking Chocolate Milk (K=kilo, H=hecto, D=deka, M=unit, D=deci, C=centi and M=milli)

Warm Up 1.01 1.List four fundamental units in the metric system and tell what they are used to measure! 2.List 6 frequently used metric system prefixes, define them and write them as a power if 10 (what exponent goes with which prefix?). 3.Convert the following: 6 meters to centimeters 400 milliliters to liters 2500 grams to kilograms 2 seconds to milliseconds 4. How many miles are in 30,000 inches?

Warm Up 1.My driveway measures 1200 cm. How many meters is it? 2.It is 192 kilometers to my mom’s house. How many meters do I have to drive to see her? 3.The back of my hand measures 8 cm. How many millimeters is that? 4.I bury a treasure 4500 millimeters deep. If you have a shovel that will only dig down 4 meters, can you steal my treasure? Why or why not? 5.A basketball goal is 3 meters tall. How many centimeters tall is it? 6.I weigh 90 kilograms. How many grams do I weigh?

Warm Up 1.What is a physical change to matter? 2.What is a chemical change to matter? 3.Give two examples of physical changes? 4.Give two examples of chemical changes?

MA 1.02 1.Name and define the seven steps of the scientific method. 2.What is scientific notation? 3.Rewrite 35,690 in scientific notation. 4.Rewrite 1,000,000 in scientific notation. 5.Convert 156 meters into centimeters.
