The Skeletal System EQ: How does the skeleton function, and how do joints help our bodies move? http://www.shockfamily.net/skeleton/JOINTS.HTML http://www.ehc.com/vbody.asp
2
Previously, in life science… Previously, students learned about the systems of the human body. Now, they will look at the skeletal system in greater depth.
3
Bones are alive! A. Stronger than concrete or rock! B. 20% of our body weight is bone! C. Bones contain cells and tissue! D. They grow and repair themselves!
4
1. What do the skeletal AND muscular systems do? Bones and muscles work together to allow you to move.
7
2. What are the major functions of the skeletal system? Provides shape & support (like the frame of a building)
8
2. Enables you to move (provides places for your muscles to attach)
9
3. Protects your internal organs (brain, heart, lungs)
10
4. Produces blood cells! (blood cell factories in the bone marrow) White blood cell Red blood cells
11
5. Stores certain materials until your body needs them. Examples: calcium & phosphorus
12
3. Why is the vertebral column considered the center of the skeleton? The bones in the skeleton are in some way connected to the backbone.
13
4. What is a joint? A place in the body where two bones come together.
14
5. What role do joints play in the body? Joints allow bones to move in different ways!
15
6. How are joints classified? 2 types of joints ImmovableMovable (can’t move)Hinge ex: CraniumBall and Socket Pivot Sliding
16
7. What type of joint is found in the elbow and knee? Hinge joint
17
8. What type of joint is found in the shoulder and hip? Ball-and-Socket joint
18
9. What type of joint is found in the neck? Pivot joint
19
10. What type of joint is found on the wrist and ankles? Sliding joint
20
11. What does a ligament do? Holds bones together in a movable joint.
21
12. What is cartilage? Tough but flexible connective tissue that covers the ends of bones.
22
At your table...
23
13. Draw the structure of bones Diagram PH 522-523
24
14. How do you keep your bones healthy? Eat a balanced diet (strength) & get regular exercise(density) Your bones need CALCIUM!
