What are lymph nodes? Why do my lymph nodes sometimes feel swollen and tender when I am sick? Is there more to the lymphatic system than lymph nodes?
3
Components ◦ Red bone marrow ◦ Spleen ◦ Lymphatic vessels ◦ Thymus ◦ Lymph nodes ◦ Tonsils Functions ◦ Drain excess fluid from between cells ◦ Transport fats and fat soluble vitamins from food ◦ Immune Response
5
Present throughout the body. Clustered in groups. Filter a fluid called lymph that is carried in lymph vessels. Contains phagocytes that destroy foreign substances.
6
Fluid moves out of circulation into the tissues at the blood capillaries. From the tissues fluid flows into the lymphatic capillary to be filtered at the lymph nodes and then is returned to blood by ducts near the heart.
7
Make a Venn Diagram comparing lymphatic system and circulatory system.
8
Begins with capillaries Forms a circuit Ducts drain into veins Contains red blood cells Contains white blood cells Skeletal muscles help fluid move Blockage or buildup associated with swelling. Includes the heart Includes the spleen Contains plasma Contains lymph
