Governments Consolidation Challenge Decentralized and independent departments managing over 1,000 servers citywide Heterogeneous / “unique” technology based on individual department designs. IT Costs / Resources Embedded in in 60 Department Budgets Political – “cause and effect”

San Francisco Approach to Consolidation Facilities … ◦ Study / Baseline / Plan for merging existing datacenters to fewer / better facilities. ◦ Build a new prototype communication hub / data center. Services/Equipment … ◦ Study / Baseline / Plan for server equipment consolidation. ◦ Set citywide technical standards / guidelines servers, storage, switches.

4 Consolidation at Facilities Level Consistent with decentralized mindset Achieves facility benefits of consolidation: ◦ Energy conservation: 50% of energy associated, can be shared in single facility ◦ Improved disaster recovery/security: appropriate infrastructure in place Consolidation may still mean multiple facilities ◦ Major service area, e.g., public safety, ◦ By geography, i.e., all data centers/rooms/closets/cubicles in a multi tenant building consolidated Drives equipment consolidation conversation and builds team thinking.

5 Citywide Data Center Facility Efficiency Study Baseline existing data center facilities in the city Review the long range technology needs for data center space Calculate the long term power and cooling requirements needed to support the proposed technology Review their operational requirements for reliability, redundancy and capacity Calculate the Tier rating based on their operational requirements Make recommendations for facility consolidation or facility modifications to meet goal of fewer / better / more cost effective facilities.

6 Prototype Data Center Creates Opportunity for a New Model Data Center will offer 3 options for service ◦ Managed Equipment ◦ Hosted Virtual Environment ◦ Provisioned (Racked and Secured) New Services customers want ◦ High Density / High Efficiency Blade Infrastructure ◦ Virtualized Environment – Private “Cloud” ◦ Enterprise SAN/NAS ◦ Enhanced Disaster Recovery / Business Continuity ◦ Remote Monitoring and Management Data Center Facilities changes ◦ 1800 sq.sft Footprint (n+2) – down from >15,000 sq. ft. ◦ Redesign of Network / Communication Infrastructure
