ON FEBRUARY 1 ST 2013 WE SAID: WE GOT RUMOURS! Windows 9 [Windows Blue?] to be released as early as this summer IF TRUE – could be a separate release or a service pack upgrade to W8 Suggestions that this could mean anything from no charge to a small charge to “regular” new version price

ON OCTOBER 17 TH 2013 Windows 8.1 [and 8.1 RT] released From the Microsoft web site: – Windows 8.1 is NOT designed for installation on devices running Windows XP or Windows Vista. – If you’re running Windows 8, visit the Windows Store for a FREE update to Windows 8.1.visit the Windows Store – If you’re running Windows 7, Purchase at $119; your files will easily transfer. – If you’re running Windows Vista or earlier, qualify for the free upgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro by purchasing [$119] Windows 8 now.Windows 8

THE WORD ON THE STREET Another release will be available in the “Spring” of 2014 Yet another release is scheduled – possibly as early as late Autumn 2014 but more likely Spring 2015

SOME GENERAL NOTES Explanation of 8.1 & 8.1 RT: – Windows 8.1 is the version for “conventional” devices – i.e. Desktops & Laptops – Windows 8.1 RT is the version for “mobile” devices – i.e Tablets and Smart Phones Windows 8.1 automatically installs Internet Explorer 11 – this appears mandatory

SOME GENERAL NOTES Windows 8.1 includes “Skydrive” storage Full details of this still being investigated During install, you have to have or create a Windows Live account. This may be part of how “your” Skydrive is identified

CONCLUSIONS We still do not see any major benefit to the average club member in Windows 8.1 – If you are OK with what you have now – stick with it – If you need or want to get a new machine [or just feel adventurous] Windows 8.1 is not as big a learning curve as you might think – You can make it similar – BUT NOT 100% IDENTICAL – to Windows 7
