3
Excuse to brush aside the significance of personal sin Implies that one is compelled to sin against his will, as if he has a quota Implies man is not accountable for sin Implies that the way God created you is flawed Implies that God is to blame for your sin
4
Some say no: › Sadducees (Acts 23:8) › Atheists › Buddhists › Scientology › Jehovah’s Witnesses But the Bible says: › I Cor. 2:11 › 2 Cor. 4:16 › Matt. 10:28 › 1 Thess. 5:23 › Acts 7:59 › And many more!
5
You are not merely flesh & blood › This physical body is not “what” you are › It is “where” you are You are first and foremost a spirit › Made in God’s image Equipped with a human body › Like a space suit or diving suit › A robe of flesh
6
We worry about outward appearance and fail to realize our true inner beauty
7
To house or clothe the spirit › 2 Corinthians 5:1-4 To carry out the will of the spirit › 1 Corinthians 9:27 › Matthew 26:41 The flesh is not evil › Just a vessel or tool › 2 Timothy 2:20-21 › What matters is what you do with it!
8
Sin occurs when you enact a choice that is contrary to God’s will. But the choice is always yours to make! God does not tempt anyone › James 1:13 God created all things, including man, “very good” › Genesis 1:31 & Ecclesiastes 7:29 Fallacy of “the devil made me do it” › James 1:14-15 & 1 Corinthians 10:13
9
God has appointed the ways to satisfy these needs without sin. Sin occurs when you indulge these needs beyond the limits set by God. Jesus was sinless!
10
Flesh & blood like us (Philippians 2:5-8) Same physical needs as us (Luke 24:36-43) Was tempted, but did not sin (Heb. 4:15) › Because He used the flesh properly › Did not allow fleshly desires to rule over Him › We should strive to be as perfect in humanity as He was! The key to His control over the flesh was the will of His spirit & strength of His mind
11
Galatians 5:17 1 Peter 2:11 Romans 8:5-8 Which is why we must learn to live like a spirit!
12
To live like a spirit, you must think like a spirit To think like a spirit, you must learn spiritual things To learn spiritual things, you must study God’s Word And let it transform you Romans 12:1-2
13
A spirit created in God’s own image The Holy Spirit is in you (Romans 8:9) Christ is in you (Romans 8:10) The Father is in you (Ephesians 4:6) To say “I’m only human” is to deny this!
14
It means you are empowered to overcome sin and the devil › 1 John 5:4 & Romans 8:37 Change the way you see yourself › 1 John 3:1 Change the way others see you › 1 Peter 3:3-4 It means that you are not alone because God is with you › “even till the end of the age”
15
You are still a slave to sin You do not have the Father, Son, or Holy Spirit within you But it is not too late to become more than human!
