Temperature The average is above 24°C Annual temperatures are only 10-15° C Frost and temperatures below freezing are rare It gets low as 3°C and as high as 31°C Imperative Information Precipitation The dry season is far longer than the brief period of rainfall There is no set amount of rain Annual rainfall is anywhere from 10-20 cm to 1000 – 1500 cm per year There is decreasing summer precipitation
4
Climate/Seasons Alternate between wet and dry seasons Dry seasons last over five months High temperatures throughout the entire year
5
Plant Life Trees and Shrubs Leaves shed in dry season Lotus Ironwood Acacias
6
American Alligator Lizards Shrews Coyotes Raccoons Bobcats Mountain Lions Animal Life
7
Adaptation Plants have extra waxy layer to slow evaporation Plants have extra source of photosynthetic energy Animals have stage of estivation Animals don’t fight over territory
8
Food Web
9
Soil Very rich nutrients Mostly dry
10
Interesting Facts over 75% of the tropics, annual drought is a way of life Dry tropical forests are heavily logged There is really no actual distinction between this zone and the tropical rain forest Wetter or drier soils sometimes produce pockets of tropical dry forest
11
Location Tropical and subtropical latitudes Bolivian lowlands
12
Turks and Caicos Islands A lot of trees July and August is the best time to be there
13
Quiz What are some animals that live in the Tropical Dry Forest? Do leaves shed during the season? Is the dry season longer than the rainfall? Do it rain a lot? What’s the average temperature?
