New: Ch. 9 Homework Stamp Log Checklist for Success (Bathroom passes) Course Outline (if you’re new to my class) This is also on the class website Losal.org/lahs “Teachers” “Lundblad, T” “Algebra 1 Course Handouts”

9-5 Adding/Subtracting Polynomials Objective: To add and subtract polynomials. Standard 10.0

What does each prefix mean? mono one bi two tri three

What about poly? one or more A polynomial is a monomial or a sum/difference of monomials. A monomial is a number, a variable, or a product of a number and one or more variables Important Note!! An expression is not a polynomial if there is a variable in the denominator.

State whether each expression is a polynomial. If it is, identify it. 1) 7y - 3x + 4 trinomial 2) 10x 3 yz 2 monomial 3) not a polynomial

ADDING: (4X 2 + 5X – 1) + (6X 2 – 3X – 4) 4x 2 + 5x – 1 + 6x 2 – 3x – 4 10x 2 + 2x – 5 4x 2 + 5x – 1 + 6x 2 – 3x – 4 10x 2 + 2x – 5 Method 1: Combine Like Terms Method 2: Like Elimination

TOO 1) (6x 2 y – xy 2 + 7) + (-7x 2 y – 6xy 2 – 5) -x 2 y – 7xy 2 + 2 2) (x + 6y – 3) + (10y – 3x + 1) -2x + 16y – 2 3) (7x 2 + 5x) + (6 – x) 7x 2 + 4x + 6 Method 2: Make sure to line up like terms Write answer in alphabetical/descending order

SUBTRACTION: (X 2 – 6X + 5) – (3X 2 – 5X + 6) **DISTRIBUTE NEGATIVE TO 2 ND POLYNOMIAL x 2 – 6x + 5 – 3x 2 + 5x – 6 -2x 2 – x – 1 x 2 – 6x + 5 + -3x 2 + 5x – 6 -2x 2 – x – 1 Method 1 Method 2

TOO – volunteers to board 1) (6x – xy + 2y) – (-x + 3xy + 5y) 2) (10x 2 + 2x + 6) – (6x – 2x 2 + 4) 3) (6x – 2) – (10 + 2y)

Find the sum or difference. (5a – 3b) + (2a + 6b) 1. 3a – 9b 2. 3a + 3b 3. 7a + 3b 4. 7a – 3b

Find the sum or difference. (5a – 3b) – (2a + 6b) 1. 3a – 9b 2. 3a + 3b 3. 7a + 3b 4. 7a – 9b

Homework Pg. 525 #21 – 35 odd

Polynomial Vocabulary Chart Let’s do this together If you have your book.. Please get it out now.
