METALS & NON-METALS
2
Today’s Objectives: Describe the appearance of metals and non- metals Test the conductivity of metals and non-metals Understand the properties of metals and non- metals
3
Metals and non-metals Vs. CopperChlorine Spot the difference! Make a list of the differences between these two elements
4
Activity: You will be given 6 different substances You need to determine if they are metals or non-metals and then test their properties. Your results must be presented in a table (which is shown on the next slide). Then with your results make 4 general rules (2 for metals and 2 for non-metals) that can be used to identify objects as metals or non-metals. For example: All metals (are/are not) malleable … Non metals (do/do not conduct electricity) …
5
Substance Metal or non- metal? Appearance Is it flexible or brittle? Is it hard or soft? Does it conduct electricity? Metals and Non-Metals
6
Properties Summary Metals High melting point Shiny Malleable Hard (high density) Conduct electricity Conduct heat Non-metals Low melting point Dull Brittle Soft (low density) Do not conduct electricity Do not conduct heat
7
Why is it made of metal? Water pipes are made of copper because … Alloy wheels are made from aluminium because… Jewellery is made out of gold because …
8
Review Properties of metals? Ductile Strong Brittle MalleableInsulator Conductor Sonorous Low melting point High boiling point
