INK SPLATTER
2
What solvents will remove ink?
3
PURPOSE The purpose is to determine what solvents will remove ink. This is important to know because clothes are expensive. If you get ink on it then you would want to know how to get it out.
4
HYPOTHESIZE We hypothesize that vinegar will remove ink the best. We believe that because for many years it was used for cleaning.
5
PROCEDURE
6
MATERIALS DROPPER INK 20 mL OF WATER 20 mL OF GAIN DETERGENT. 20 mL OF ALCOHAL 20 mL OF VINGER 5 SPRAY BOTTELS 5 RAGS 5 LABELS 5 X 5 FABRIC SQUARES 20 mL OF HAIRSPRAY 5 TRAYS
7
Variables Manipulated: solvents. Responding: the amount of ink removed. Controlled: the fabric, amount of solvents, the amount of ink, rag, dropper, and method of rubbing stain
8
STEP BY STEP DIRECTIONS 1. PUT 5 PIECES OF 5 BY 5 FABRIC ON A TABLE. 2. PLACE INK IN DROPPER. 3. DROP 5 DROPS OF INK ON EACH FABRIC SQUARE. 4. LABEL FABRIC SQUARES A, B, C, D AND E. 5. LABEL SPRAY BOTTLE A, B, C, D AND E. 6. PUT WATER IN BOTTLE A,VINAGER IN B, ALCOHAL IN C DETERGENT IN D, AND HAIR SPRAY IN E. 7. SPRAY 5 SQURTS OF EACH SOLVENTS ON EACH PIECE OF CLOTH. 8.T RY TO RUB INK OUT WITH A RAG. RUB EACH PIECE FOR 30 SECONDS. 9. RECORD THE DEGREE THE STAIN IS REMOVED USING A RATING SCALE OF ZERO TO TEN, WITH ZERO BEING NO CHANGE AND TEN BEING COMPLETY REMOVED. 10. REPEAT STEPS ONE THROUGH NINE FOR 4 MORE TRIALS

This is a picture of one of our trials.

Conclusion Our hypothesis was incorrect. We found out detergent removes ink the best. The average ink removal rate of water was 5.8, vinegar’s average was 5.4, detergent’s average was 6.6,and alcohol’s average was 4.0. If we had to do this again we would put 5 drops of ink on the cloth then put the solvents in a tube. Then shake it for 1 minute. It would be interesting to see if we got the same results.
