CPU Called also the processor Performs the transformation of input into output Executes the instructions in each program It performs arithmetic and logical data manipulations The circuit board that contains a computer’s CPU is called the motherboard

Compatibili ty Not all software are compatible with CPU ARM processors in smartphones have different instructions from Intel. Chips in Intel’s core i7 processor family are backward compatible with the core i5, core i3 and core 2duo. Advanced Micro- Devices- AMD- are compatible with Intel. Programs written for Linux can’t run on Window.

Performance All computer’s overall performance is determined in part by the speed of its microprocessor’s internal clock. A modern computer’s clock speed is measured in units called gigahertz (GHz). PC performance can also be affected by the architecture of the processor. A multicore processor is a single chip that contains multiple CPU’s, or cores, which run simultaneously. Computer applications such as Web browsing, statistical programs, graphic design programs and computer games are convenient to use on a faster machine. The numbers of bits a CPU can process is typically 32 or 64 and is called word size. The amount of heat generated by the CPU increase as the clock speed increase.

To help minimize the environmental impact Buy green equipment, today’s computer equipment uses little energy. Use a laptop- portable computers. Take advantage of energy saving features- systems can be set up to go to sleep. Turn it all the way off- many electronic devices consume power when turned off.
