2 SS6H7 The students will explain conflict and change in Europe to the 21 st century. a. Describe major developments following WWI: the Russian Revolution, the Treaty of Versailles, world-wide depression, and the rise of Nazism

3 Treaty of Versailles ESSENTIAL QUESTION: How did the Treaty of Versailles impact Europe in the years between World War I and World War II?

4 C-Notes Definition: Treaty of Versailles One of the peace treaties at the end of World War I. It was signed on June 28, 1919. It ended the state of war between Germany and the Allied Powers.

5 Treaty of Versailles - Peace talks began in January 1919 at the Palace of Versailles outside of Paris. - Germany was a huge loser in the Treaty. 6 Treaty of Versailles After the war, Europe’s economy was wrecked and everyone blamed Germany. Germany had to give up some of its land and pay reparations, or war damages, to the Allies. Reparations totaled 33 billion dollars Germany also had to eliminate most of its military

7 Treaty of Versailles The Treaty of Versailles was meant to humiliate Germany and its people. It also made it impossible for the German people to try and rebuild their economy and their country. In the end the Treaty of Versailles did little to help Europe. It angered the Germans and helped Hitler rise to power in a few years.

8 Shifts in Borders Germany gave up 10% of its territory Countries gained independence: Poland, Austria, Finland, Lithuania, Latvia, & Estonia Lithuania, Latvia, & Estonia later taken over by Russia Czechoslovakia came into existence Denmark increased its size from territory gained from Germany France and Great Britain obtained: Most of Germany’s former colonies and Colonies from the Ottoman Empire

10 Consequences of Versailles Treaty Treaty ended WWI Germany was blamed and punished for causes for causing WWI The goal was to punish Germany so severely that it could no longer wage war This humiliated Germany and left it unable to defend itself (in case it were invaded by another country) The people of Germany were angry and eager for someone to restore their pride and fix the economy (enter Adolf Hitler)

12 What is the provision/condition?How did each provision/condition of the Versailles Treaty hurt Germany? 1.Forced to accept blame for causing WWI Humiliating 2.Limited number of people in the army to 100,000 3.Air force not allowed 4.No offensive weapons (i.e. tanks and artillery) 5.Limited warships to 6 for the navy 6.Pay for war damages 7.No enrollment into military or contribute money to government in time of war 8.Army soldiers allowed a minimum of 12 years of service 9.Lost Rhineland 10.Lost territory I colonies to France, Great Britain, Denmark, etc.
