First…what is a verb? Def:Expresses action or a state of being “Ok, enough said!” This is known as the “Main Verb” (1 of 6)

Examples of Helpers and Main Verbs… Kyle and Bobby are rocking the long hair. What is the helping verb? Helper: “are” Nate & the guys were stylin’ with their new hair cuts! What is the helping verb? Helper: “were” What is the main verb? Main: “rocking” What is the main verb? Main: “stylin’”

Linking Verb: Connects/Links the subject to a word that describes it. IsMay beAsGrow AreLookWas Remain Were Seem Has BeenAppearHave Been EXAMPLE: Gabrielle is a dancer.

More Verbs… Transitive & Intransitive What’s the difference?

Transitive Verbs Expresses action toward a noun. The action passes from the doer (subject) to the receiver The word that receives the action of a transitive verb is called a direct object. EXAMPLE: The monkey entertained Zach. *Think…entertained what/who?...Zach, so Zach is the direct object.

Intransitive Verbs Tells something about the subject. There is no one or nothing receiving the action. EXAMPLE: Mr. Doodle crowed. *There is nothing receiving the action crowed, so crowed is INTRANSITIVE. Hint: If the sentence is intransitive, there is no direct object.

Remember This!! If a sentence is Transitive it has a Direct Object and maybe an Indirect Object. If a sentence is Intransitive, it does NOT have a Direct Object. Trans = DO Intrans = No DO

What is a Transitive Verb? Answer: It expresses an action directed at another person, place, or thing. It takes a DO. What is an Intransitive Verb? Answer: It tells something about the subject. It does NOT take a DO. What is a Direct Object? Answer: It tells who or what receives the action. What is an Indirect Object? Answer: It tells to whom the action is done.
