2. First things first…grammar  A personal pronoun takes the places of a noun or nouns.  Ex: Bill McCoy heard. He heard.  Ex: The boys heard. They heard.  Singular pronouns:  I, me, my, mine  you, your, yours  he, him, his  she, her, hers  it, its  Plural pronouns:  we, us, our, ours  you, your, yours  they, them, their, theirs

3. Write each personal pronoun. Then write if it is singular/plural, and gendered or neutered. 1. Simon and I entered the chess tournament after we had been in the Chess Club for six months. 2. Simon said it would be a good way to test our competence. 3. He’s always looking for a challenge. 4. “Do you think it will be too hard for us?” I asked. 5. “I think you’ll win a prize,” he told me.

4. Homework! Get out your questions #1- 5. I’ll come around and check. Before we answer the questions…what did you notice about the book?  How does she address the teachers?  What about other students?  How does she name the chapters?  What kind of person is Melinda Sordino?  …what questions do you have?

5. In Class Activity: What are the first 10 lies administration, teachers, and classmates told you about Knightdale High School. In your notebooks, please write numbers 1-10 and detail “lies” about KHS similar to pages 5 to 6 of Speak.

6. The Clans! How does this clip compare to Speak? To KHS?  Meet the Clans Meet the Clans  Look at page 4 for help.

7. Pre-Assessment  Try to complete Part One by yourself first. Do not look at others’ work.  Then, complete Part Two using the sections I’ve assigned:  “Welcome to Merryweather High”  “Sanctuary”  “Fizz Ed”  “Friends”  Finally, complete Part Three  You have 20 minutes.

8. Homework for tonight:  Read pages 25-46  Answer questions 6-9

10. First Things First: Grammar  An antecedent is the noun to which a pronoun refers. A pronoun agrees with its antecedent in number and gender. In each sentence, underline the personal pronoun and its antecedent. Then write if it is singular or plural and the gender of the pronoun. 1) Travelers throughout the world are familiar with youth hostels and enjoy staying in them. 2) Members of the organization can stay in hostels when they travel. 3) Miranda stayed in hostels during a trip, and she introduced several friends to hosteling. 4) Miranda brought photographs to class and shows them to her friends.

18. First things first! Grammar! Subject and Object Pronouns  A subject pronoun can be used as a subject or predicate nominative. I, you, he, she it, we, and they are subject pronouns.  Ex: I have been reading about Marie Dorion. (subject)  Ex: It is I. (predicate nominative).  An object pronoun can be used as a direct and an indirect object, as as an object of a preposition. Me, you, him, her, it, us, and them are object pronouns.  Ex: The coach saw you. (direct object)  Ex: The coach gave you the notebook. (indirect object)  Ex: The coach gave the notebook to you. (object of preposition)

19. Underline the correct subject pronoun or object pronoun  1) Librarians read review of books before (they, them) buy (they, them).  You and (I, me) usually make our choices based on the title.  My friend often buys (I, me) books, and (I, me) always give (he, him) books for his birthday.

23. In-class Practice!  For a classwork grade, and individual work, label the examples from Speak as Alliteration, Personification, and Hyperbole.
