The Depression Across the Globe? The Depression hit Europe as well as the United States Germany was hit hardest since it was already in economic ruin following the Treaty of Versailles German paper money lost all value…people used it as insulation and kindling to keep warm in winter Sweeping German Marks, (money) off the street German women using German Marks as fuel to heat her home.

The Depression in Germany Germans were very dissatisfied with their govt. They felt they were suffering unfairly due to the mistrea- tment of others/nations. over other The NAZI party, formed in 1920s to fight for the rights of Germany over other nationalities, countries and belief systems. Germans wanted to retake lands split from Germany in Treaty of Versailles. Germans wanted renew pride in being German, and stop communism, and eradicate “lesser races”

Can Democracy solve problems? In the 20’s and 30’s people began to question whether democratic governments were too weak to solve their problems. They began to turn to Dictators.

Rise of Dictators Italy: Benito Mussolini took over Italy & made it a Fascist state. Fascism is different from communism that the government doesn’t own everything. Fascism is based on extreme militarism, and nationalism, and blind loyalty to the state. Superior nations Mussolini argued had the right to conquer inferior nations. (Social Darwinism) Germans angry over in the Treaty of Versailles supported Adolph Hitler’s rise to power creating a NAZI fascist state. Hitler believed in a “master race”. He blamed Jews for all Germany’s problems. Benito Mussolini and Adolph Hitler

Rise of Dictators During the Depression Militarists took control of the Japanese government. The Japanese also preached the superiority of the Japanese race over other Asian races and non-Asians. Soviet Union: Josef Stalin dictator of the Soviet Union His government took ownership of all private personal property. It is controlled by the Government. If one protested you property being taken you were killed or imprisoned for life.

Italy Invades Ethiopia In 1935, Mussolini’s armies invaded Ethiopia. Ethiopia appeals to the League of Nations for help…….None comes. Another time aggression not challenged! Ethiopia

American Neutrality In 1935, congress passed the Neutrality Act; it was the first of several laws designed to keep the US at peace This kept the President from selling arms, making loans, or giving any other kind of assistance to any nation involved in the war.
