SWEAT WHAT IS IT?
2
Why do we sweat? Sweating is our bodies way of regulating its body temperature. We have two different types of sweat glands.
3
Eccrine Sweat Glands - Are found all over our body, especially on the face, back and palms of the hand. - This sweat is 99% water which is released onto the surface of the skin to cool us down as it evaporates. - It has no odour, but it tastes salty!
4
Appocrine Sweat Glands - Are found in our armpits and groin. - The sweat from appocrine glands is stimulated by hormones and it is quite oily. - When this fluid comes into contact with air and bacteria, it produces body odour. (BO!!)
5
Preventing B.O. What deodorant do you use? Do you use deodorant to remove B.O. after sweating? DID YOU KNOW that aerosol deodorants can’t get rid of BO by spraying over existing smells – only washing your body AND clothing will eliminate bad odours.

BOOKWORK Please answer the following questions in your workbook: 1) Why is perspiration necessary? 2) How many sweat glands are there in our body, and how much fluid do they produce each day? (Does everyone sweat at the same rate? Why?) 3) Where are eccrine sweat glands located, and what do they do? 4) Where do you find apocrine sweat glands, and what do they do? 5) How is body odour caused, and how can we get rid of it? 6) Explain the difference between antiperspirants and deodorants. http://www.cyh.com/HealthTopics/HealthTopicDetails.aspx?p=243&np=292&id=2387 Copy and paste this website into your search engine to help find the answers.
