Location The pancreas is located deep in the abdomen, between the stomach and the spine. It lies partially behind the stomach. The other part is in the curve of the duodenum.

Hormones produced and function The two hormones are insulin and glucagon. The insulin and glucagon are secreted directly into the bloodstream. They both regulate the blood sugar level and in the blood.

Reason why the pancreas should stay Insulin lowers the blood sugar level. The purpose regulates blood glucose in the normal range. Forces many cells of the body to absorb and use glucose there by decreasing blood sugar levels. Glucagon Assist insulin in regulating blood glucose sugar in the normal range. The actions are opposite from insulin. Forces many cells of the body to release or produce glucose increasing blood sugar.

Maintaining homeostasis homeostasis is the maintaining of the normal concentrations etc in the body. In the case of the pancreas and the liver, it is the concentration of glucose in the blood that is monitored and maintained. this needs to be maintained in order to provide fuel for your body's cells, particularly those in the brain. this is why diabetes is such a problem as this system breaks down and their blood sugars are not maintained inside normal boundaries.

Why is maintaining homeostasis important When the blood glucose has rose, this is detetced by beta cells and they become activated, they secrete insulin which inhibits the alpha cells (negative feedback) and once it has reached its target cells it acts by causing cells to take up more blood glucose from the blood and can increase metabolism so the glucose is used. Glucose can also be converted into glycogen where it is used as an energy store. All of this lowers blood glucose levels. If the blood glucose levels get too low, alpha cells detect this and secrete glucagon, this inhibits the beta cells and causes glycogen to be converted into glucose. It can also turn fat into glucose to raise blood glucose levels..
