Joints Chapter 9
2
Joints (articulations) = where bone meets bone Classification: Non-movable (synarthrosis) Slightly movable (amphiarthrosis) Freely movable (diarthrosis)
3
Synarthrosis may be connected by bone fusion, cartilage, or fibrous connections e.g. between the bones of the skull, between the teeth & jaws
4
Amphiarthrosis may be connected by collagen fibers or cartilage e.g. between tibia & fibula, between vertebrae
5
Diarthrosis surrounded by synovial fluid e.g. elbow, ankle, shoulder, hip
6
Accessory Structures of Synovial Joints Meniscus – fibrocartilage pad Fat pad – packing material for the joint Ligament –attaches bone to bone Tendon – connects skeletal muscle to bone Bursa – sac filled with synovial fluid that cushions adjacent structures & reduces friction Fig. 9.1
