NCOs LEAD FROM THE FRONT Mission: To assist soldiers, civilians, and families in successfully relocating into and out of their commands Responsibility: Commander IAW: AR 600-8-8 A SPONSOR Provides accurate, timely information and support needed to help relieve the problems of relocating TOTAL ARMY SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM

NCOs LEAD FROM THE FRONT A SPONSOR…. Is a soldier or civilian employee usually of the same gender, family structure, rank and military career field or occupational series Is usually from the same unit, has been in country more than 60 days, is not scheduled to deploy or PCS within 60 days of newcomer’s arrival and is available to provide assistance Is not the person the newcomer will replace Assists new arrivals to the community Represents the gaining unit in a positive manner

NCOs LEAD FROM THE FRONT A Good Sponsor will….. Make newcomers and their families feel welcome Help newcomers make informed decisions Help newcomers get settled and adapt to the environment quicker Represent the gaining unit in a positive manner Why??? Because Soldiers take care of Soldiers!!

NCOs LEAD FROM THE FRONT Sponsor Duties…. Complete sponsorship training Review any command regulations and policy letters on sponsorship program. Provide timely and accurate information Let newcomer know you are available to assist Make new personnel and their families feel welcome

NCOs LEAD FROM THE FRONT Who Gets a Sponsor??? All civilians and service members in pay grades E-1 through 0-6 (single and married) will be appointed an individual sponsor It is up to the incoming personnel to decide how much support they require from their sponsor

NCOs LEAD FROM THE FRONT Advance Sponsorship Pre-Arrival Initiate contact with incoming personnel within 5 working days of receiving their information Send a Welcome Packet, you can get them from ACS Ask what specific needs and concerns newcomer has. If they don’t know, then try to ask them questions to help you determine the needs and meet them Quickly answer all questions and concerns of the newcomer. If you do not know the answer, ask for help instead of not answering at all. Provide specific unit, mission/duties and in processing details Provide specific installation housing policies and cost of living information Sponsor the newcomers whole family. Initiate contact between spouses and children, if appropriate

NCOs LEAD FROM THE FRONT Advance Sponsorship Pre-Arrival Tell newcomers where you will meet them when the arrive Arrange temporary lodging and transportation Inform chain of command of any change of status concerning incoming personnel Conduct routine follow-up with newcomer and all correspondence, make sure nothing has changed in the the status Unaccompanied and single personnel need just as much information and assistance as accompanied personnel, In addition to the above information, take single soldiers to the BOSS office

NCOs LEAD FROM THE FRONT Advance Sponsorship Arrival Duties Welcome member at arrival point, include family is possible Escort them to temporary lodging and ensure they have immediate basic needs taken care of (meals, money, pets, emergency contact numbers)

NCOs LEAD FROM THE FRONT Advance Sponsorship Post-Arrival Duties Escort to in processing locations Introduce to immediate chain of command, supervisors, and co-workers Provide tour of essential post and community locations Take the newcomer and their families to ACS and other support agencies Assist in POV information (here in USAREUR need to remember registration and USAREUR driver’s license Keep in touch with the newcomer

NCOs LEAD FROM THE FRONT Things to Remember Help newcomers settle-in and take care of immediate needs Think of what would have helped you when you arrived to the community Greet the newcomer with a positive attitude Provide reliable information FIRST IMPRESSIONS ARE IMPORTANT, THEY LAST REMEMBER THE GOLDEN RULE: TREAT OTHERS LIKE YOU WANT TO BE TREATED

NCOs LEAD FROM THE FRONT Going The Extra Mile While this is not a requirement, the sponsor may also provide Unit patches Welcome plant or small gift Snacks and water in lodging Have food for pets, if needed Provide list of telephone numbers and telephone dialing directions Plan a welcoming event for the newcomers or invite them to join you in off duty activities
